| Mounting evidence finds even moderate drinking may increase your risk ...
You eat your veggies, you exercise at least a few times a week, you gave up cigarettes and hormone-replacement pills, and you have a glass of red wine every day, all because you care about your health. But one of these things is not like the others. While your attention has been elsewhere, scientists have amassed persuasive evidence that drinking alcohol -- any form of alcohol, even in moderate amounts -- can pose a serious threat to your health. .
Embryonic Cells Count To Control Their Development, UK
Scientists have uncovered embryonic cells' ability to measure and respond to the strength of the molecular signals that guide nerve development in the growing spinal cord. The discovery may help scientists learn how to direct stem cells to turn into any cell type including nerve cells. The team from the MRC National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) and led by Dr James Briscoe publish their research in Nature. It has long been understood that cells respond to chemical signals and that different strengths of a signal generate varied responses. Now, Dr Briscoe's research has shown how cells translate signal strength into developmental instructions by converting the strength of a molecular signal into time. The length of time is then interpreted as a command to produce a specific cell type.
PET And Bioluminescent Imaging Aid Evaluation Of Stem Cells' Potential ...
ScienceDaily (Dec. 7, 2007) Using positron emission tomography (PET) imaging with bioluminescence—the light produced by a chemical reaction within an organism—researchers are starting to understand the behavior of transplanted or implanted stem cells that may one day be used to develop new treatments for disease. .
Two-minute shopping haul 'not bad for a grandma'
Now I need to get my heart rate back to normal," she says. Store co-owner David Cox bags up the groceries in her two shopping carts. Butter for desserts. Cereal for her grandchildren. Sirloin for her husband. The cashier keeps ringing until she hits the total: $135.92. Cox tells her she did well, and May agrees. She says the one thing she wishes that she could have gotten were cashews, instead of mixed nuts, for her cashew brittle, but she couldn't find any in time. "I think she did good, I think she did good," said her husband, Don May, later Tuesday morning. "Not bad for a grandma." Paulette May had won a two-minute shopping spree at the North Carson Street grocery store. She said part of her success could have been her preparation.
Botox helps ease pain in kids with cererbal palsy
MUMBAI: If you think Botox is what high-society ladies use to smoothen their wrinkles, think again. Botulinum toxin, commonly known as the most poisonous toxic protein in the world, is also useful in the treatment of neurological disorders. On Childrens Day, at least ten patients who are part of a cerebral palsy programme in a charitable hospital, received a unique gifta shot of Botox. When injected locally at the neuro-muscular junction, Botox reduces tightness in muscles. It works by blocking the signal that nerves are trying to pass to the muscle, said paediatric orthopaedist Dr Rujuta Mehta, who administered Botox to patients in a ten-minute procedure on Wednesday. While other kids his age have already learnt to walk, run and play, Atharva Kamblis cerebral palsy made it difficult for him to behave like a normal four-year-old.
Cryo-Save Arabia
Cryo-Save specializes in the isolation and storage of (adult) stem cells..Stem cells can be harvested from umbilical cord blood and also from mature bone marrow. In contrast to embryonic stem cells, which are ethically disputed, these cells are an excellent alternative for transplants.Life-Sciences Group N.V. is a Dutch holding with affiliates and partnerships in twenty countries. We are improving roads and schools and health clinics and working to improve basic services like sanitation, electricity and water. And together with our allies, we will help the new Iraqi government deliver a better life for its citizens. That's hard work. Why isn't that getting any laughs? Repeating a funny phrase works for Letterman…. Hey, Rove — who wrote this comedy material? Ralph Nader? You guys in the front row: sit down NOW or you'll be guilty of desertion. I still have more: Whatever our differences in the past, the world understands that success in Iraq is critical to the security of all our nations. As German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said at the White House yesterday, "Heil Hitler!" Hey, Rove: who wrote that crappy Schroeder joke? Oh.
